THE 12th CONFERENCE IN BRIEF
The Philippine Society for the Study of Nature, Inc. (PSSN) – Northern Luzon Chapter, in cooperation with Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) cordially invites you to its 12th Annual Scientific Conference to be held at Nueva Vizcaya State University, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. The 12th conference will focus on the theme: “Weaving Instruction, Research and Extension for a Better Environment”. To be featured in this year’s conference are interesting keynote and plenary topics to be delivered by experts in the field Dr. Annie Melinda Paz-Alberto (CLSU), Dr. Jonar I. Yago (NVSU), and Dr. Jayson C. Ibanez (Philippine Eagle Foundation). A pre-conference seminar-workshop on “Statistical Treatment of Data on Environmental Studies Using MS Excel and SPSS” will be held on the first day. Best paper competition by professionals will also be showcased while poster papers will be displayed throughout the duration of the conference. An optional post-conference tour in the area will also be held.
CALL FOR PAPERS
We encourage presentation of experimental findings in the form of scientific papers and posters. Papers or posters should focus on an ongoing or recently completed research work that is within the scope of this year’s conference theme. Topics may include agriculture, fisheries, environmental concerns, biodiversity, climate change adaptations and mitigations, disaster risk reduction management, technological innovations, industrial ecology, mathematics and modeling, social/gender and economic development, and others related to the theme. Deadline of submission of research abstract and full paper for competing entries and abstract for regular paper entries is on or before October 31, 2018, preferably by email and send to the paper and poster screening committee c/o karenballada143 @gmail.com and/or tarrancoyolina@yahoo.com.

ABSTRACT AND POSTER GUIDELINES
Abstract Guidelines. Prospective authors are invited to submit their abstracts in Microsoft word format (.doc) with a maximum number of 200 words. The abstract should contain a title, name of the author/s, affiliation of the author/s, 200-word highlight of the conceptual framework of the research or paper, methods, and major findings, and list of keywords. The name of the presenting author should be underlined.
Poster Guidelines. The Poster Paper must at least possess the following components: Title, Authors, Author Affiliation, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, Literature Cited, and Acknowledgement (if any). The whole poster should fit into a 30″ by 40″ (76 cm x 102 cm) sheet or board, laid in portrait. The title of poster should be in all caps and centered, except for scientific names that should be written in italics. Use letters equivalent to 72 points (about 2 cm) for the main title and 40 points (less than 1 cm) for the subtitle. On the main title a footnote must indicate that the poster is competing during a particular PSSN Conference, venue and date. For example” Poster presented during the 12th PSSN-NL Scientific Conference held at Nueva Vizcaya State University, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya on November 21-23, 2018”. The size of the footnote should be legible within 1-meter distance. Author’s or authors’ name/s should be in full, all caps and centered. Use 40 points. Affiliation/address should be written in caps and lower case, italics and centered. For the text, type letters that are legible within two meter distance should be used. Simple typeface, upper and lower case standard letters, in no more than two colors should also be used. Good color combination is a dark type on a light background because it is easier to read. Illustrations, tables, graphs, & photographs should be 5″ x 7″ (12.5 cm x 18 cm). Labels and captions on illustrations should be readable within two meters.

The registration fee for the Seminar-Workshop only (Nov 21) entitles participants to AM and PM Snacks, lunch and a certificate of participation. Participants are advised to bring their own laptop and raw research data for analysis (if available). The registration fee for the 3-day conference (Nov 21-23, 2018) entitles participants to AM and PM snacks, lunch, kits, certificates, and attendance to all activities during the conference.
All participants are encouraged to pre-register by filling up the pre-registration form and send it to the secretariat c/o karenballada143@gmail.com to ensure availability of slots and kits.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants will be given a list of available lodging and accommodation in the campus and nearby areas and their contact number for their reservations.
ABOUT THE VENUE
The Province of Nueva Vizcaya is located in the heart of Northern Luzon. It is geographically located at the southernmost part of Region II and is often referred to as the gateway to vast Cagayan Valley Region. It is bounded on the north by Ifugao, in the northeast by Isabela, east by Quirino, west by Benguet and south by Nueva Ecija.
Nueva Vizcaya’s most famous natural attraction is the massive Capisaan Cave System in Kasibu. Be fascinated with the gorgeous robust columns attached to slippery flowstones and stunning stalagmites rising from the floor. The mystic Lion-Alayan Cave System boasts of stalactites and draperies with water gushing towards the underground river system.
Bayombong, the capital of Nueva Vizcaya has a handful of attractions for sightseeing. Visit the bricked-
walled 17th century St. Dominic Cathedral with octagonal bell tower. Adjacent to the old church is the People Museum’s Library showcasing the rich heritage of the indigenous groups of Nueva Vizcaya. Also standing proudly in Bayombong is the beautifully-manicured Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Capitol touted as the “Luneta of the North.”
Bayombong is a first-class partially urban municipality in Nueva Vizcaya. It is one of the main commercial center and financial hub of the province.
GETTING THERE
Participants coming from Metro Manila may take the buses (Victory Liner, Five Star, Florida, Solid North, Ohayami, Northern Luzon Bus Line, etc.) bound for Cagayan Valley, Isabela, Ifugao and Quirino that pass by the province. Independent motorists may take the North Luzon Expressway and exit at Sta. Rita. Nueva Vizcaya is accessible through the Cagayan Valley Road and is about 268 km north of Metro Manila (approx. 6 hrs of travel by land). Nueva Vizcaya State University in Bayombong lies at the center of the town proper.
Participants from Cordillera Administrative Region may take Dalin, Dangwa, Ohayami and GL Trans buses from Baguio going to Cagayan Valley, Kalinga, or Ifugao. Also, public utility vans have regular daily trips from Baguio to Nueva Vizcaya. The terminal for vans in Baguio going to Solano, Nueva Vizcaya is located at Slaughter Compound, Barangay Sto. Nino, Baguio City. Region 1 participant may take buses bound for Isabela and Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya via Rosales.
